Val Chmerkovskiy Shares Family Saved Him From The Front Lines Of War
The situation in Ukraine is frightening. But for one renowned dancing family, it all hits a little too close to home. Dancing With The Stars pro Val Chmerkovskiy is the latest member of the family to speak on how the Ukraine crisis impacts him personally.
Val Chmerkovskiy thanks his parents for taking him out of the country as a child
Yesterday, Val’s older brother Maks Chmerkovskiy updated fans on the situation. He’s working in Ukraine at the moment and was on his way to a bomb shelter to stay safe from Russian military forces. In the description on his Instagram video, he discusses how the invasion triggered his PTSD.
Maks, Val, and their parents left Ukraine in the 90s due to tensions with Russia. For now, it seems like Maks is safe, but he’s reliving one of the darkest chapters of his life.
Laster, Maks’ wife Peta Murgatroyd asked for prayers. She is at home with their son in the United States. Right now, they’re just waiting for Maks to come home safely.
Today, Val Chmerkovskiy shared his own heartfelt post describing the situation.
“My parents fled this country for this exact reason,” the 35-year-old dancer began. “Not because it wasn’t good to them, but because their kids would see war eventually. It’s a cruel irony that 28 years later my brother is in a bomb shelter in Kiev. If they hadn’t left I would be on the front lines defending my home right now.”
“And the most heartbreaking thing of all I would be either killing or dying at the hand of my fellow brothers. The Russian people don’t want this!! We stood by each other’s side. We love and celebrated one another. I speak Russian yes but make no mistake about it, I am a proud Ukrainian and now all the world will finally know the difference. Slava Ukraini all day every day! And to all my Russian friends this might be the best and only time to stand up to your dictator.”
Hopefully, Maks can safely rejoin Val and the rest of his family very soon.
What are the rest of the DWTS cast members saying right now?
Many Dancing With The Stars pros are Russian. It’s not immediately clear how they feel about the situation or how this will impact their relationship with Val. The rest of the dancers are on tour right now, so they haven’t posted much about anything except the tour in recent months.
It’s entirely likely that they are aware of the situation but are taking time to choose their words carefully. After all, this is a very serious and delicate subject.
