The Real Reason Fans Watch ‘My 600-Lb Life’ Revealed
My 600-Lb Life fans tune in for a wide variety of reasons. Fans come in all different shapes and sizes and from different backgrounds. Recently, a Reddit thread decided to poll users: why exactly do they watch the popular TLC show?
Although users had varying opinions, it became immediately clear why people are watching the show. Keep reading to find out more.
My 600-Lb Life fans are tuning in for a very specific reason
On each episode of My 600-Lb Life, viewers get to know people who are really struggling with their weight. Show participants generally weigh at least 600 lbs, but sometimes they weigh even more. Some participants struggle with food addiction while others turned to food as a coping mechanism for past trauma.
But they all have one goal — they want to commit to healthier lifestyle changes so Dr. Now will perform bariatric surgery. We’ve seen some pretty spectacular success stories in the past. However, episodes from the most recent season seem to focus on participants who just can’t commit. Why is this?
It’s entirely possible that TLC is choosing to focus on participants who don’t succeed because they know why fans are truly watching. According to the Reddit poll mentioned above, My 600-Lb Life fans mostly watch for the drama and chaos.
Some fans tune in to see participants overcome difficult challenges. Others are interested in the psychological aspect of weight loss. But nearly half of Reddit users that voted say they’re just interested in the drama.
Absolutely no one intends to develop weight-related health complications. But many My 600-Lb Life participants end up with them because of their size. In the comment section, many viewers say that they also struggle with their weight and sometimes watching the show helps motivate them.
Unfortunately, at the end of the day, it seems to be more about spectacle than anything else. If TLC knows this, it definitely explains why we didn’t see many success stories this season.

Some participants seek legal action against the show for creating dramatic situations
Sometimes, My 600-Lb Life participants even pass away from weight-related health complications. Season 5 participant Gina Marie Krasley tragically passed away last summer. But she was also in the middle of suing the show before her death.
In the lawsuit, Gina alleged that the show’s film crew forced her to eat absurd amounts of food in order to fit the show’s narrative. She also cited she suffered from emotional distress after filming.
And Gina isn’t the first participant to file claims against My 600-Lb Life. Based on what we’ve seen so far, it’s possible that TLC and film producers are creating a spectacle for the sake of the fans. If this is true, it’s not surprising that Gina and other participants try to take legal action against the show.
