Her disappearance kicked off the state’s largest search. Moreover, Abby’s disappearance left her family, especially her mother Zenya (Durance), investigators, and the community mystified of her whereabouts.
Abby was taken by Nathaniel Kibby (Savage). In captivity, Abby was kept in a soundproof container. In addition, she was forced to wear a shock collar while enduring psychological, sexual, and emotional abuse.

Abby Hernandez Shares How ‘Survival Instincts’ Kicked In
Back in 2018, ABC’s 20/20 spoke to Abby Hernandez about this horrific ordeal. Abby was kidnapped walking home from school. However, for nine months, people were searching for her with no luck. She totally vanished. However, from the moment that she was abducted, she revealed that her “survival instincts, fueled by adrenaline” kicked in.
I remember thinking to myself ‘okay, I got to work with this guy.’ I said [to him], ‘I don’t judge you for this. If you let me go, I won’t tell anybody about this.’
Unfortunately, she could not convince him to let her go. Instead, she endured unimaginable torture and prayed for strength. “I remember I never said ‘amen’ in my mind.” She then continued, “I never wanted to end my prayers because I didn’t want God to leave me. I just really wanted to live.”
