Body dysmorphia is a mental health disorder in which one can’t stop thinking about one or more perceived defects or flaws in their appearance. It is a flaw that appears minor or can’t even be seen by others.
Clayton appeared on the Talking It Out podcast. He spoke with hosts and former contestants Mike Johnson and Dr. Bryan Abasolo about this issue. Clayton admits he was worried about what he was going to look like on camera. He said, “I remember that was a big thought I had — the camera adds 10 lbs. So I’m going to be honest with you — I was kind of scared.” Clayton continued, “I was like, here, we’re going to find out right now how I look on camera, I have no idea. And I was afraid that it was going to put me in a little dark spiral, like, you look fat.”
Clayton said, “you can never shake that body dysmorphia — it’s always there.” He said he is able to control it and he has some through diet. However, he said it’s always going to be there.
How he controls it
Clayton said for the most part he’s okay now. However, he noted it takes only three comments with someone saying he’s fat to put him back in a negative mindset. He said, “That’s kind of the power of body dysmorphia and the fear of it is like, you never truly get rid of it.” For example, Clayton admitted he’s always been self-conscious about his stomach.
He went on to say it’s hard to get past because it’s so visual. So, if one can’t change how they view themselves then they will never truly shake the issue. Clayton said everyone wants to look in the mirror and like what they see. However, he also said it’s not a quick fix and never will be.
Clayton was also quick to say that everyone is different. What works for him may not work for someone else.
