Whether you have been watching Yellowstone from the beginning, or just started watching the recent Paramount marathon, you may still have some questions about the Dutton family tree.

Moreover, now that 1883 has premiered, there may be even more questions.

Here is the Dutton Family Tree explained.

Yellowstone: 1883 Shows Dutton’s Move To Montana

Yellowstone: 1883 is the new prequel that shows James and Margaret Dutton (Tim McGraw, Faith Hill), and their move north. James is John Dutton III’s (Kevin Costner) great-grandfather.

In 1883, the Duttons have two children, Elsa (Isabel May), and John (Audie Rick).

We also have James’ sister, Claire (Dawn Olivieri), and her daughter Mary Abel (Emma Malouff). Claire is prim and proper, and hypercritical of her brother and his family.

However, she stirs things up by throwing rocks at some outlaws. This is the Wild West, and they respond in the only way they know–with their guns. They start shooting, and Mary Abel is killed. Claire, who was also recently widowed, takes her life.

Next Dutton Generation

Although we have already met Elsa Dutton and John Dutton I in 1883, there is still one more brother, Spencer thanks to some Yellowstone flashbacks. Eventually, the spinoff will include Spencer.

Taylor Sheridan has not revealed all of the details of this part of the family tree. However, we can assume that the current day John Dutton is John Dutton’s grandson, as he would need two John Duttons before him to be John Dutton III.

Yellowstone’s Mysterious Part Of Family Tree

Although Yellowstone fans have seen John Dutton II (Dabney Coleman) in flashbacks, not much is known about this generation. Moreover, there is currently not a spinoff that features this generation of Duttons.

He is likely 1883’s John Dutton’s son. A widower, he also lost one son, but there is no other information on whether the current John Dutton has any other siblings.

Yellowstone-Dutton Ranch Family Head Is John Dutton III

In Paramount’s Yellowstone, everyone knows that John Dutton III (Costner) is the head of his family. His wife Evelyn (Gretchen Mol) died while out riding with Kayce (Luke Grimes), and Beth (Kelly Reilly). The couple had a third child, Lee (Dave Annable).

Kayce is married to Monica Long (Kelsey Asbille). They have a son named Tate Dutton (Brecken Merrill).

The Adopted Duttons

Yellowstone fans have come to learn that Jamie Denton (Wes Bentley) is the first adopted Denton. Born James Michael Randall, he was the son of Garrett and Phyllis Randall. Tragically, Garrett beat Phyllis to death.

Subsequently, John and Evelyn adopted the three-month-old Jamie. They did not change his first name. It is just a coincidence that it is the same first name as John’s great-grandfather.

Yellowstone Favorite Is Surrogate Dutton

Lastly, there is Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). Wheeler had a similar story to Jamie. His father had come back to kill his ex-wife and two sons. Rip had been unconscious when he got up to find his brother dead, and his father trying to murder his mother.

Although he was unable to save his mother, he did kill his father with a frying pan. John Dutton gave him a second chance. Now, he is engaged to Beth Dutton.

The Yellowstone Season 4 final episode airs on Sunday, January 2.
