‘Bringing Up Bates’ Family’s Disturbing, Controversial History Surfaces
The Bringing Up Bates family is currently facing backlash after a disturbing video went public. Now, more details about the family’s past are coming out. Read on to get the full scoop on the latest Bates family controversy.
Carlin Stewart Shares Offensive Joke
As we reported on Friday evening, Carlin Stewart shared an offensive post while at a family gathering. In the clip, the Bates are playing charades. Lawson Bates acts out the “hunting” motion by pretending to shoot one of his younger brothers with a gun. Then, in the background, another brother guesses “George Floyd.” Everyone else laughs at the inappropriate joke. Not only did Carlin record this, but she posted it on her Instagram stories for her 350,000 followers to see.
Shortly after posting it, the UPtv star took the video down. However, it’s been saved on social media and is still available to view. Here’s the Reddit link to the video. Fans are calling for Bringing Up Bates to be canceled.
After Carlin received negative messages about her post, she sent a poorly executed apology to some of her followers. She’s now under fire for not truly apologizing.
Bringing Up Bates Family’s Disturbing Photo Surfaces
On social media, information about the Bates family’s past is circulating. Katie Joy of Without a Crystal Ball shared a quick summary of the Bates family’s racist actions in the past. Fans and critics are bringing up the family past to show that this recent joke isn’t an isolated incident.
Katie writes, “The problem is that the Bates have shown us over and over that they are racist. They just cover it up better today than they use to in the early days.”
On Facebook, Life is Not All Pickles and Hairspray posted about the Bates family’s history as well. They shared a photo from the family’s home renovation. Then, they explained, “The Bates family posted photos of their renovated house and rooms which included this photo of Nathan Bedford Forrest. Forrest happened to be the first Grand Wizard of the KKK. The Bates have a son named Nathan.”
The Facebook post points out, “Gil and Kelly are college educated so I’m sure they know all about Forrest’s terrorist/racist/murdering history.”

I’m not condoning what happened here but doesn’t Kelly Jo have a sister/ adopted sister who is African American ? I’m surprised at them and Carlin’s video
The Bates are a great Family! I can vouch that I’m getting tired of hearing about that guy from Minnesota and we’ve all made off-color jokes throughout our lives so no one‘s perfect so knock it off on the dates are a nice family.
The Duggers on the other hand they don’t mind if you know their oldest son molester sister is an anyone else and they just hide it like everything‘s hunky-dory so yeah if you wanna pick an evening pick on the Duggers third decorating and digging their own hole
It may have been inappropriate to do cherades and making fun of George Floyd, but not exacty a racist thing to do. Despite what people think, not every sungle thi g a person says or does is about race. Just because someone names his or her child Nathn does not mean he or she is a racist. That is a ridiculous conclusion. I am not sure why they would have that ocitire in their home. However, naming their child Nathan does not make them a racist.
I have a picture of what Christians think Jesus looks like hanging in my house.. Does that mean I hate Jewish people or Muslums etc.???
Please don’t use KJ (WOACB) as a source. She’s trash.
I’m college educated, and had no idea who the first KKK Grand Wizard was. As for Katie Jo of Without a Crystal Ball, in MY opinion, she is out to take down any family that practices the Christian faith. She is so anti-Christianity on her YouTube channel! And her obsession with the IBLP is out of control! While I agree that the former leader of the IBLP, if he’s truly guilty of what he is accused, is scum, that doesn’t mean that Gil Bates had anything to do with anything improper. In fact, they were all cleared. That, of course, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen…but there either wasn’t enough evidence to indict or the “victims” didn’t come forward.
And as for Carlin’s “racial” faux-pas is just sad. I don’t necessarily think she meant it the way it came out, and if she did, she needs to be educated. But I really think it was just something that popped out without her even thinking about what she was saying.
It’s ironic to me that it’s ok for rappers to use the foulest language possible, for actors to call out anyone who doesn’t agree with them, and for movies to be full of hatred, violence, despicable language, nudity, etc. But let a silly 20-something year old slip up and say something stupid and it’s a HORRIBLE travesty! Good gosh people…let it go!!!!!!!!!!!
Exactly! 😀
So this show was cancelled because reality doesn’t fit with the narrative the media wants to portray? Flip the channel and you have a man who is married to multiple women. The list of ludicrous continues. Why not just cut that particular episode?
They’re probably half ignorant of the stuff they say and do, so that in itself needs to be taken into consideration. I don’t think they have ill will towards people, it’s just where they come from. Additionally, it’s hard to imagine having that many children and having a normal household the way a normal family has. They won’t be your average family dynamic. Most of those kids get married way too young too. I suspect they do it so they can be intimate since it is banned before marriage. Hope they all last and grow together instead of apart.
