Suni Lee Reveals She And Some Friends Were Victims Of A Racist Attack

Asian Americans are experiencing more racism these days. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, many people wrongly pointed fingers at people of Asian descent and blamed them for the pandemic. Even Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee wasn’t immune from these racist attacks.

Olympic gymnast Suni Lee was the victim of a racist attack while hanging out with friends

Suni Lee is 18-year-old and living her best life right now. She’s working hard on Dancing With The Stars and even made it into the semifinals round, which will air Monday night. But even among all her success, Suni has still been on the receiving end of racism. She recently sat down with PopSugar to discuss her gymnastics career and the subject of racism also came up.

She told the publication the incident occurred one night while she was waiting for an Uber with some friends — all of them were Asian Americans. A car sped by and shouted racist slurs at the group and told them to “go back where they come from.” Suni added that someone leaned out of the car and sprayed her with pepper spray before speeding away.

“I was so mad, but there was nothing I could do or control because they skirted off,” Suni told the publication. “I didn’t do anything to them, and having the reputation, it’s so hard because I didn’t want to do anything that could get me into trouble. I just let it happen.”

Suni Lee’s story is heartbreaking but unfortunately not uncommon. Many other Asian Americans have similar stories of vicious attacks and people that hurl hate speech at them.

This racist incident must have been incredibly difficult. But Suni Lee isn’t someone to give up. During the Janet Jackson Night episode of Dancing With The Stars, Suni also revealed plenty of people are trolling her online for her dance performances. But she’s not about to let them win either.

Suni revealed in the prerecorded package that the nasty comments have been impacting her mental health. And anyone knows how hard it is to focus when you feel like people cheer for you to fail. The young Olympian struggled with some mental health blocks before the episode but apparently managed to work through them.

She stepped out on the dance floor on Monday donning a beautiful, confident look that really caught everyone’s attention. The judges even gave her and her partner Sasha Farber a perfect score for their routine.
