The Bachelorette contestant PJ Henderson speaks out about brother

PJ Henderson seemed to be well-liked on The Bachelorette. However, there wasn’t a strong enough connection with Michelle on the show. The firefighter from Houston, Texas seemed well-rounded and also charitable. He has lived a fun life but has also seen tragedy.

One tragedy that has affected him deeply is the loss of his brother. Bachelor Nation shared details about what PJ had to say about his family’s loss. He appeared on Talking It Out with Bachelor Nation where he discussed the tragic event.

Sadly, PJ lost his older brother to a shooting in 2007 and his younger brother also to violence in 2017. His younger brother was reportedly the shining light in the family. PJ said, “Bakari was the shining light of the family… He graduated from Arizona business school in 2017 and he was working on a clothing line.”

PJ went on to discuss exactly what happened to his brother. He was murdered and not even in the United States. He was in Greece when the senseless tragedy occurred. PJ said,  “Bakari took a selfie with a bottle girl inside and there was a guy who didn’t like that. They had an altercation outside and when Bakari went back inside, the guy came back with other guys. They chased him down and jumped him. He ended up losing his life out there, just like that. I don’t know if it was an American thing or a race thing, but it was really unfortunate the way it went down.”

Were the killers caught?

PJ went on to say that there were ten men who jumped his brother. They were all detained by police for a bit. Eight are still detained. They went on trial in the fall of 2017 and the verdict reportedly didn’t fit the crime. PJ and his family traveled to Greece to hear the verdict and view the trial.

PJ explained they did appeal to a higher court. He said, “The prosecutor said he’s been doing this for many years and he’d never seen such a misrepresentation of justice. He pressed for a retrial in a higher court. We got that, so that’s a good thing, but COVID pushed everything back, so right now it’s looking like the retrial will be in February.”

Fortunately, the violence occurred in a highly-populated area and so there are many witnesses and video footage of the crime. PJ also explained the differences in how the justice system work in Greece differs from those in the United States.

His family created the Bakari Foundation to help others who have lost family members to violence. They try to honor Bakari whenever they can. PJ says he always looked up to his little brother. It’s because of Bakari that PJ loves to travel.

Through supporting each other, PJ’s family has been able to deal with their loss.
