What Does ‘The Witcher’ Creator Think Of Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia Portrayal?
The Witcher is more than a popular video game. It is also Netflix’s second-biggest series next to Bridgerton. However, in the beginning, there was a set of Witcher books by Andrzej Sapkowski. What does the bestselling author think of Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, the famed Witcher?
Is Andrzej Sapkowski Happy With Henry Cavill’s Portrayal In The Witcher?
When Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski wrote The Witcher, for his son, he did not imagine that this would lead to numerous bestselling books, a very popular video game, and now the Netflix series. The highly anticipated Season 2 will be dropping on December 17.
Therefore, he may have a few things to say about Henry Cavill portraying Geralt of Rivia. Does the Argylle actor stand up to the Geralt of his imagination?
Communicating with People via email, he seemed quite satisfied with Cavill’s performance, and how he physically looked. “I was more than happy with Henry Cavill’s appearance as The Witcher.” The novelist added, “He’s a real professional. Just as Viggo Mortensen gave his face to Aragorn [in The Lord of the Rings], so Henry gave his to Geralt — and it shall be forever so.”
Although he recommends that fans “read the books” to understand Geralt’s motivations, he does admit that the mutant’s motivations changes are “complicated.”
Moreover, Sapkowski wants anyone consuming anything Witcher-related to feel something. “I shall be happy if the viewers — and readers — take anything away, anything that shall enrich them in some way. Also, I sincerely hope to leave the viewers — and readers — hot. In every sense. Not tepid, not lukewarm.”
Henry Cavill Fought For Netflix Role
Henry Cavill’s embodiment of Geralt of Rivia is quite remarkable. He created a special workout to personally perform the complicated stunts and sword fighting himself. We cannot forget that he had a severe hamstring injury that could have been career-changing.
Cavill eats a special diet, that includes a food he abhors–sweet potatoes! His gorgeous curls are always mangled due to wearing a wig five or six days a week. Henry has even risked his eyesight to wear the “cool” but dangerous yellow contact lenses to authenticate Geralt’s physical appearance.
However, he was not showrunner Lauren Hissrich’s first choice. When he first heard that Netflix was going to develop The Witcher, Henry set up a meeting with Hissrich. She felt that he seemed “like a nice guy.” but nothing more.
Two things came out of this meeting. The first is that Henry discovered that the video game, which he had played and was familiar with, was based on a set of books. He thought it was the other way around. As he is a lover of fantasy fiction, he delved right into the series. Second, he felt that Geralt of Rivia was “close to my heart.”
However, as the showrunner started to audition over 200 actors, she kept hearing the Man of Steel’s voice in the back of her head. After the 207th audition, she contacted Cavill again and asked if he was still interested.
Well, you know the rest!
