Israel Dillard Starts First Grade: Homeschool Or Public School?
Israel Dillard is heading back to school! As we reported, he recently picked out a new dinosaur backpack while the family was on vacation. Jill Duggar’s oldest son is officially in the first grade. In a new social media post, she documented his first day of school and told Counting On fans all about this year’s setup. Is he in public school again, or is he homeschooled this year?
Fans will recall that Jill and Derick sent their son Israel to public school for the first time last fall. Longtime fans know the Duggars were homeschooled by their mom, Michelle. Not many of the Duggar grandchildren are of school age yet, but the ones that are ready for school are homeschooled. So, this is a big change for the Duggars.
Jill and Derick shared about their decision to send their son to public school. Fans were concerned about what Israel may learn in school that contradicts the family’s religious beliefs. But Derick reassured fans this wasn’t a decision the family made lightly.
Fans were curious to know whether Israel would be homeschooled or go to public school this year. With Jill’s announcement that Israel has started school, she answered fans’ questions.

In her post on Monday, Jill wrote, “1st day of 1st grade was last week for this big guy! 😃Its hard to believe we are already here!! 😢 🦮Israel loved walking Fenna to school on his first day & she was super happy too, but got a little concerned after he walked inside…she stood there and kept watching for him. 🥰 👩🏻🏫Israel’s kindergarten teacher moved up with him to 1st grade this year and we couldn’t be happier!”
In one photo, Israel is standing outside holding a “first day of first grade” sign. It reads that he’s six years old, loves to play basketball, and his favorite food is pepperoni pizza. His favorite movie is The Grinch, and his favorite book is Hardy Boys. He likes math, and his favorite place is the beach.
She shared a series of photos of Israel’s first day of first grade, as well as some pictures of Sam. You can see them all here.
