Jill Duggar Sets Boundaries With Parents: ‘They Aren’t Always Invited’
Counting On alum Jill Duggar Dillard is trying to find a healthy balance in her relationship with her parents. She opened up about boundaries in a recent social media post, revealing how she and her parents have decided to handle birthdays and other events.
The discussion began after Jill shared a few snaps from her son Samuel’s fourth birthday party. In an Instagram post, Jill documented his big day. Jana and James Duggar were a part of the celebration, but noticeably, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar weren’t there. Derick’s mom, Cathy Dillard, was a part of the fun day though.
Jill wrote, “Uncle @jamesaduggar brought his fire truck over (+ Aunt @janamduggar came too) & we rode to @chickfila in the fire truck and met ‘Mima’ @cldilla for lunch!” She adds that her parents dropped off gifts.
Fans know that there’s conflict between Jill and Derick and Jill’s parents. The couple has been open about this. They don’t appear to see the Duggar family, especially Jill’s parents, very often. Derick even promises he’s working on a tell-all book about the Duggar family.
Jill Duggar opens up about boundaries
In an Instagram comment, one of Jill’s followers wrote, “I guess the parent Duggars chose not to be grandparents to these boys. What a shame they are like that what with all the family values they talk about. Sorry, Jill. You don’t need those kinds of people in your lives. At least Jana was allowed to go.”
In response, Jill opens up about the boundaries she’s using with her family. She writes:
“The fire truck birthday party was just something we worked out between us and James. My parents always send or bring gifts for the boys birthdays. We’ve had to put some boundaries in place over time for ourselves as we learn how to navigate life and work toward healing and restoration. They aren’t always invited to everything and vice versa.”
The comments are no longer on the post. It’s unclear whether Jill decided to delete the fan’s comment or if they deleted their comment after Jill responded.

You can’t pick your family. You may love them but not necessarily like them all. There’s always conflicts and you shouldn’t have to spend time with anyone you don’t want to. Sad but true.
