‘Wipeout’ Contestant Dies: What Happened?
On Friday, it was revealed that a Wipeout contestant died. TMZ broke the news, revealing that the contestant had attempted to complete the obstacle course. The contestant died on Wednesday.
Production sources spoke with TMZ about the death. Per the sources, the contestant was a male. Following his attempt at completing the obstacle course, medical care was needed. The contestant was having chest pain after trying out the course. Wipeout‘s on-site medical team took immediate action, but paramedics were needed as well. After receiving medical attention, the contestant was taken to the hospital.
Per TMZ, law enforcement officers received a cardiac arrest call. This was around noon on Wednesday. At that time, the on-site medical team used a defibrillator on the contestant.
Due to the nature of the show, safety precautions are important. Per TMZ, “Every Wipeout contestant undergoes medical exams before participating. There are also 2 paramedics on-site, plus a safety producer and paramedic coordinator.”
Additional details about the contestant’s death
Few details have been revealed about the death so far. This is assumed to be due to privacy concerns for the family.
At this time, the cause of death has not been declared. It likely has something to do with cardiac arrest, but that is nothing more than an assumption at this point.
Because the show is not currently airing, fans of the show wouldn’t necessarily know who the contestant is. The show is preparing for a reboot though. It seems that the contestant was prepared to be a part of the reboot.
When is Wipeout returning?
Longtime fans of the show know that it originally aired on ABC. The show aired from 2008 to 2014. But, it’s being rebooted and will air on TBS.
So far, a premiere date has yet to be announced. The show’s Instagram page has been sharing details about the reboot auditions for at least the past six months. It appears that casting in Southern California wrapped in mid-October.
About the death, TBS offered a statement, saying, “We are devastated to have learned of his passing and our deepest sympathy goes out to the family.”
