Sad news for Dancing With The Stars fans. One of the contestants of Season 29 was forced to drop out of the competition after a life-threatening medical emergency. What does that mean for the show’s planned double elimination Election Eve special?

DWTS Contestant Drops Out

On Monday morning, hours before the live show of Dancing With The Stars, ABC released news that will surely disappoint some of the fans. Jeannie Mai is leaving the competition after a life-threatening diagnosis. The co-host of The Real confirmed the news on Good Morning America.

She was diagnosed with epiglottis, which causes swelling of the throat. While it may seem minor, it can become life-threatening if the throat becomes swollen enough to block the airway. On the advice of her doctor, Jeannie Mai will undergo emergency surgery.

As a result, she cannot continue on her quest for the Mirrorball Trophy on Dancing With The Stars. What does the news mean for the double elimination planned for the Monday, November 2nd episode?

Will There Still be a Double Elimination?

In promotion ahead of the Election Eve episode, ABC touted the importance of voting…. for DWTS contestants. In fact, TWO couples were to be sent home from the competition. However, Jeannie Mai’s withdrawal changes that.

The official DWTS Instagram account addressed the double elimination question in their post sharing the news of her withdrawal. They wrote, “Since Jeannie had to withdraw from the competition, tonight’s show will feature the eight remaining couples and a single elimination.”

Additionally, the show gave thanks to Jeannie May for inspiring her co-competitors and viewers “with her energy and dedication.”

But the show must go on! Some fans feel regret for Monica Aldama and Val Chmerkovskiy.

Fans Thinks Monica and Val Should Return

At the beginning of the season, Jeannie Mai showed promise for possibly winning the competition. However, the judges found her last few dances lackluster.

During last week’s live show, celeb dancers Jeannie Mai and Monica Aldama landed in the bottom two. The judges ultimately chose to save Jeannie. But now fans think Monica and Val should be get another chance since Jeannie has to leave the show.

Unfortunately for those fans, the show doesn’t work like that.

Along with ABC and DWTS, we offer Jeannie May our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

In the November 2nd episode, the celebrity dancers will have TWO routines, including a relay with some of their competition. Tonight’s episode will separate the frontrunners from the just-going-through-the-motions.

Dancing With The Stars airs Mondays on ABC.
