‘This Is Us’ Season 4 Ends–What’s Next?
This article includes spoilers from This Is Us Season 4.
Season 4 of the hit NBC drama This Is Us came to an end on Tuesday, March 24. Now, fans are waiting for and wondering about Season 5. In the past, new seasons have premiered in the fall. And, they wrap up in the spring. So, it seems like that’s when we can expect Season 5. As TV Shows Ace reported, Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia) won’t be playing a major role in Seasons 5 and 6.
In an interview with People, producer Dan Fogelman talks about the future of the show. If you watched the Season 4 finale, you know that Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore) agrees to go with the clinical trial in St. Louis. This means she and Miguel will live there for nine months.
In the interview, Fogelman talks about Rebecca and what the upcoming season looks like for her. He says,“We have a big storyline planned for Mandy in the next coming season in present day as an older woman and her past timelines. Particularly, when we land in St. Louis with her, kind of exploring with Miguel. … Here is the opportunity where we’re going to be bringing them in a location together and undergo this treatment that they didn’t necessarily plan on trying. It will also allow us to get towards, which has always been the plan in the back part of our series, further understanding how their relationship bloomed then stalled then bloomed again and really getting inside their lives.”
This Is Us producer Dan Fogelman mentions the rift between Kevin and Randall
The relationship between Randall Pearson (Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin Pearson (Justin Hartley) is not looking good. Season 4 ended without them really reconciling. In the flash-forward, they’re both at Rebecca’s deathbed, but they don’t seem to be on good terms, even years later.
In the interview, Fogelman touches on their relationship and that major fight, saying, “Family rifts are really hard to both be a part of and to watch. It had to be something that would really separate these two for a period of time for this family.”
The This Is Us producer continues talking about the conflict, adding, “Part of making a drama is not being afraid to make people be really flawed and really ugly so that hopefully, as we tend to do on our show, the hope and the repair we offer is well-earned and well-executed when it comes.”

What’s up with Kevin’s romantic life?
In the Season 4 finale, Kate Pearson’s (Chrissy Metz) friend Madison (Caitlin Thompson) plays an important role. Thompson has actually been married to Fogelman since 2015.
During the finale, Madison returns to talk with Kevin. Viewers will recall that the two of them previously hooked up. But, Madison later finds out she’s expecting twins. She explains that she’ll keep them no matter what and doesn’t expect anything from Kevin.
Then, Kevin decides he wants to be a part of his kids’ lives. Viewers know that Kevin’s mysterious fiance is going to appear soon, but there have only been hints about her up to this point. Fogelman says that there’s still more to Kevin’s love story, explaining, “There are many more chapters in Kevin’s romantic story. Kevin has a journey ahead of him.” After finding out that Madison is expecting Kevin’s kids, some viewers assumed they’d end up together. But, thanks to Fogelman, there’s still more to uncover.

Producer Dan Fogelman wants viewers to be invested in the characters
Fans of the show are familiar with the Pearson family. Throughout the past four seasons, we’ve slowly been introduced to other characters. Fogelman says he’s been intentional about this. He wants viewers to be invested in the characters by the time we really get to know them.
He says, “Our hope is to continue to make people invested in the future storylines by getting to those characters slowly, as we’ve done, so that by the time we’re really landing to full stories with them, if we do, you feel that great investment.”
In the Season 4 finale, appropriately named, “Strangers: Part 2”, several new characters made an appearance. This includes Madison’s OBGYN (Josh Hamilton) and Kate and Toby’s adopted daughter Hailey (Adelaide Kane). So, if everything goes as Fogelman says, we will slowly get to know these new characters.
What’s next for This Is Us?
As mentioned, Season 5 should premiere in the fall. Fogelman commented on what the season holds. He said, “I’m very excited about, especially with where the world is right now, the uplift, and I would call it almost rebirth, that comes next season. Kind of rebirth and a lot of new beginnings, particularly for birth and rebirth would be a big thematic part of next season.”
And, he even teased that there’s “something big” that happens in the Season 5 premiere.
