Exclusive Interview: Lisa Whelchel Talks Hosting ‘Collector’s Call’
Right now, Lisa Whelchel of Facts of Life fame is hosting the show Collector’s Call. New episodes air every Sunday night on MeTV. TV Shows Ace got the chance to talk to Lisa and found out about the show.
Lisa Whelchel talks collecting things
Are you a lover of collectibles?
“What I love about the collections on this show is that most of the items bring us back to something from our childhood. Rediscovering something that has been buried in your mind for decades sparks all of these incredibly delightful memories. I absolutely love to help bring that joy to the people watching.”
Do you collect anything?
“I don’t. I am a less is more type of person. Maybe this is one of the reasons why it is so fascinating to me to meet the collectors. It’s the people who draw me in and their stories and why they got started collecting.
Growing up, my aunt owned an antique store and we would go all over the world and she would be looking for items for her antique store, so I learned a lot about collections through her.
I also didn’t think ahead to keep some items from my Facts of Life days! It never crossed my mind to keep any of those items. But I am thankful my grandmother had the foresight to keep some items from my time on The Mickey Mouse Club.”
Lisa’s role on Collector’s Call
How did you land this role?
“I would do this even if I didn’t get paid or it wasn’t on TV. When they approached me to host, I was all in. I love meeting people, especially people that are characters – and trust me, anyone who collects at this level is a true character. I thoroughly enjoy asking them questions about their collections and why certain items hold such meaning to them. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

What collection was your favorite this season?
“Revisiting my time from Facts of Life and seeing Charlotte Rae’s personal collection was so special this season. Charlotte collected quite an impressive bit of memorabilia before she passed and her son, Larry, invited us in to take a look. One of the things that surprised me about the episode was, I’ve known Charlotte for 40 years, and yet I knew her after she had lived a ton of life, and she had a huge career before she was ever on Facts of Life. It is a real gift to be able to get to learn so much about her through her memorabilia from her personal collection.”
