This Is Us fans love Mandy Moore for her role as Pearson matriarch, Rebecca. But, before she starred on the hit NBC drama, she was both a musician and an actress. She’s still pursuing her music career to this day, just like young Rebecca does on the show. Her most recent album, Silver Landings, just came out. She seems pretty proud of where that’s taken her. But, that doesn’t mean she’s not reflecting on where she’s been.

Recently, Moore opened up about her music, focusing on both the past and present. Keep reading to see what she has to say.

This Is Us star Mandy Moore “apologized for a lot” of her old music

Moore kicked off her music career in 1999. Longtime fans of the singer may recognize one of her early songs, “Candy”. This was released when she was only 15 years old and had signed with Epic Records.

Moore may feel confident in her musical abilities today, but that hasn’t always been the case. The singer and actress talked to Us Weekly and said, “I think I really apologized for a lot about my early work because I was embarrassed and being a teenager, not having creative control and not fully standing behind some of the choices that were made on my behalf.”

She added, “The only reason that I’m here today, 20 years later, is because of 15-year-old Mandy and the music that she was singing and how I started out. I love her. She’s a part of me and always will be and I carry her around. It’s important to acknowledge that and have affection for that time of my life.”

So, it seems that the This Is Us star is more appreciative of where she’s been than she once was. It’s apparent that she’s learned from that time of her life and has gained some of that control she was lacking before.

Moore talks about new album

In an interview with Us Weekly, Moore opened up about her present music career. Though she plays a big role in This Is Us, she’s keeping busy and making music too. Her most recent album, prior to this new release, was made 11 years ago. Since she was fairly popular back then, this might come as a shock. If she was in her prime, why didn’t she keep things rolling? Well, Moore took some time to explain this all.

In the interview, she said, “I was really hesitant and confused about how to find my way back into music. And I didn’t know if anybody cared anymore — not that that is necessarily a reason, but I think I really leaned on the excuses. ‘Oh, well I don’t have a manager,’ ‘I don’t have a record label,’ ‘I didn’t know how to start from square one.’”

The This Is Us star also shared that she was missing music. She wanted to jump back in. But, some of the hesitation boiled down to her fears. At some point, she began writing again, which helped her get back into the music scene.

She spoke about who supported her through it all. Her husband, Taylor Goldsmith, is a performer himself. And, her bestie, Mike Viola, is always there to help her out. Moore said, “I was able to really lean on my husband and Mike, who produced this record. We wrote it all together, the three of us.”

The This Is Us actress adds that those two men are “profoundly talented” and that they’re her “favorite singer/songwriters and musicians.”

Touching back on those fears she previously mentioned, she said, “Being able to work with them and know that I was sort of safe to be wading back into the musical waters was the perfect way to kind of step back into this chapter of my life.”
