TLC’s Counting On can’t keep up with everything that’s going on in the family’s life. Due to production time, the show is always a little bit behind the stars’ lives. Fans understand this, but it can make it hard to stay up-to-date. For this reason, TLC airs birth specials for many of the Duggar births. Most recently, the network put Bella’s birth on their website. Earlier this year, shortly after her birth, a birth special about Ivy became available for fans to watch.

Jessa Duggar Seewald planned to have Ivy at the hospital

On Tuesday, December 10th’s episode of Counting On, Jessa talked about her plans to give birth to Ivy at a hospital. She said, “Since we’ve done two home births, this’ll be the first time Ben and I have to pack a hospital bag. Since Jinger and Jeremy delivered in a hospital I decided to video chat and ask her what are some things I need to bring to the hospital.”

Based on Jessa’s plan, her midwife was supposed to deliver Ivy at the nearest hospital. Well, it turns out that Jessa’s baby was on her way when the midwife was out of town. Jessa said, “The morning that my water broke was the morning that my midwife left town for a week.”

Prior to Ivy’s birth, Jessa was the mom of two boys, Spurgeon, 4, and Henry, 2. Both boys were born five days after their due dates, so Jessa wasn’t thinking it was a big deal that her midwife was going out of town. That is, until her water broke. She said, “I was not expecting to go early, I was expecting to go five days late again, we thought we had two weeks left.”

Jessa ended up giving birth to Ivy at home, which isn’t uncommon in the Duggar family. Everything went smoothly, but Jessa wouldn’t stop bleeding after she gave birth. She had to go to the hospital.
